Creating a team purpose for more engaged teams

A team purpose defines why we exist as a team. Does your team respond with identical answers to the question ‘Why do we exist as a team?’

If not, design a team purpose with your teams because a shared purpose brings the members of a team together and creates a sense of belonging and engagement. A shared purpose defines the team, and it describes why the team exists. It helps the team understand why they want to collaborate and reach their shared goal. Having a shared purpose also gives the team motivation and clarity.

A team purpose can be created in two steps:

1. Define why the team exists and answer the questions to

• What do you do as a team, what is your job as a team?
• Who do we work for?
• What impact do we want to create as a team? How can we help the people we work for do a better job?

2. Write your team purpose statement and start with small, daily actions to live your team purpose. The team members should remind each other of their purpose and connect it to their daily work.
